High Tea in Rye

The Origins of High Tea also know as "Meat tea"

High tea is properly served around 4.00pm although in the 1700's could be between 5 and 6 within the working classes. Afternoon tea became fashionable in the early 19th century, thanks to Anne Maria Russell or Catherine of Braganza depending on your historical beliefs. It was never intended to replace dinner but rather to fill in the long gap between lunch and dinner at a time when dinner was served at 8pm. Lifestyles have changed since although afternoon tea is still every bit as delightful at Saltcote Place.

What is a traditional High Tea

High tea typically consists of a hot dish, followed by cakes and bread, butter and jam. Occasionally there would be cold cuts of meat, such as ham salad. If you wish to adapt this please be our guest, convention has its place but so do free spirits.

The Saltcote Place high tea content

Where possible we source local clotted cream, local scones, local strawberries and conserve in preference to jam (pips under the plate are to be avoided where possible). Fresh rocket and lettuce adorn the home style crockery which many will recognise from the 1970's; at Saltcote we avoid where possible the "Same old" crockery and cutlery you find in countless hotels and tea rooms.

We only offer High Tea by prior arrangement, and whilst we are happy to receive the initial enquiry by email it is always nice to have a chat and get the details perfect whenever possible.
